National Waterways Museum Gloucester
Canal and waterways museum in historic Gloucester Docks with hands-on displays and boat trips.
The National Waterways Museum sits in a tall Victorian warehouse at Gloucester Docks, telling the story of Britain's canals and the people who lived and worked on them. Inside there are hands-on displays where children can work models of locks, learn how boats move through the water and explore the colourful world of canal life, all under cover, which makes it a good rainy-day stop.
The setting in the restored docks is a draw in itself, with historic boats moored alongside, the grand warehouses and waterside to wander, and the chance of a short boat trip on selected days. The docks area has cafes, shops and open space, so the museum works well as part of a wider visit to Gloucester. It is a compact, affordable couple of hours rather than a full day.
It suits toddlers up to older children, with the interactive lock models and boats appealing to younger ones and the history to older. Check opening days and any boat-trip dates before travelling.
Good for: history, water, rainy-day, trains. Ages: 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
