Farmoor Reservoir lies five miles west of Oxford at Cumnor, on the Thames floodplain, and offers a free four-mile circular walk that suits families looking for a straightforward outdoor morning. The path around both reservoir basins is mostly flat and wide, partly surfaced and waymarked, running past bird hides and reed margins before heading out to Thames-side meadows where the circuit meets the river and the nature reserves at the northern end of the site.
The reservoir is one of Oxfordshire's most visited birdwatching sites, with wildfowl present year-round and numbers peaking in winter when migratory species arrive on the open water. The three wetland nature reserves at the northern end were created from former agricultural land and have won recognition for their habitat work. Families with binoculars will find bird hides to settle in and look from. The main path sections are wide enough for a buggy and dogs are welcome on leads.
It is a quiet, free outing rather than a built attraction, and is best thought of alongside other things west of Oxford rather than as a full-day destination on its own. It pairs naturally with Hill End, just down the road, for a fuller day outdoors. There are no refreshments on site, so bring a picnic, and plan for about two hours at a relaxed pace.
