The push-button controls are the whole appeal for small children, ours pressed every one twice. A perfect dry stop when the Cotswold weather turns.

Bourton Model Railway is one of the country's larger model railway exhibitions, tucked behind a shop in the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water. Several detailed layouts run trains through miniature landscapes, towns and stations, with plenty of buttons and switches that children can press to set trains moving or trigger little scenes. That interactivity is what keeps younger visitors engaged.

It is entirely indoors and warm, which makes it a dependable rainy-day stop and a nice contrast to the model village and bird park nearby. The layouts reward close looking, with tiny figures, vehicles and details to spot, and there is a model shop attached for enthusiasts. It is compact, so it works best as one stop in a wider Bourton day rather than a destination on its own.

It suits toddlers up to older children, with train-mad youngsters getting the most out of it. Let little hands loose on the press-button controls.

Good for: trains, rainy-day. Ages: 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
