✦ We visited
The penguin feed is the moment to aim for, and the dinosaur trail kept our youngest busy long after the birds. Park once in Bourton and do Birdland with the model village.

Birdland sits on the edge of Bourton-on-the-Water along the River Windrush and is a relaxed, attractive wildlife visit. It is home to penguins, who have daily feeds that are always a hit with children, plus flamingos, pelicans, parrots, owls and a wide collection of other birds in aviaries and along the river. The setting in the Cotswolds village is part of the charm.

For families there is a Marshmouth nature trail, a Jurassic Journey dinosaur trail with life-sized models that younger children love, and seasonal encounters and feeding sessions. The site is compact and walkable in a couple of hours, which makes it easy to combine with the rest of Bourton, where the model village and motoring museum are a short stroll away.

It suits all ages, with toddlers enjoying the penguins and dinosaurs and older children the variety of birds. Time your visit around the penguin feed if you can.

Good for: animals, outdoors, dinosaurs. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
