Skip straight to the Pleasure Gardens via the mini train, the maze and playground are where our day actually happened. Buy the annual pass if you might come back, it pays for itself fast.
Blenheim Palace at Woodstock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Winston Churchill, but for families the real day out is the grounds rather than the state rooms. The Pleasure Gardens are reached by a miniature train and hold the Marlborough Maze, a giant draughts and chess set, a butterfly house, lavender garden and a large adventure playground that easily fills an afternoon.
The wider parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown, gives miles of buggy and bike-friendly paths around the lake and great cascade, ideal for walks, picnics and letting children run. The formal gardens and the palace itself are there for those who want the history, with family trails inside. It is a big, expensive but high-quality day, and an annual pass can make repeat visits good value.
It suits all ages, with the maze, train and playground keeping younger children busy and the grounds and history appealing to everyone. Allow a full day and plan around the mini train times.
