✦ We visited
This is a slow, pretty visit, best when the borders are in full flower. The teashop and orchard picnic spots are the highlight, so bring a blanket.

Waterperry Gardens near Wheatley is a peaceful eight-acre ornamental garden once home to a famous horticultural school for women. For families it is a gentle, green outing with riverside walks along the Thame, herbaceous borders, a knot garden, orchards and lawns with room for children to roam. It is more about calm exploring than rides and play, which suits some families perfectly.

The site has a quality teashop and a plant centre, a gallery and a small museum, plus a saxon church in the grounds. Seasonal family trails, an apple weekend in autumn and Christmas events add structure for children through the year, and the orchards are lovely for a picnic. Paths are largely flat and buggy friendly.

It suits all ages as a relaxed half day rather than a high-energy one, with the youngest enjoying the open space and grown-ups the planting and teashop. Time a visit around a seasonal event if you want more for the children.

Good for: outdoors, sensory, arts. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
