Hire a pedalo in summer and feed the ducks afterwards, it is a cheap and cheerful couple of hours. The play area kept the little ones busy while we had a coffee by the lake.

Pittville Park is Cheltenham's largest ornamental park, a free and very pleasant green space wrapped around two lakes near the elegant Pittville Pump Room. It is a classic town park done well, with wide lawns, mature trees, flower beds and bridges, and it makes an easy, low-cost outing for families wanting fresh air without travelling far.

For children there is a boating lake with rowing boats and pedalos in season, a small aviary with birds to look at, a popular play area and a skate park, plus plenty of ducks and space to run and play ball. There is a cafe by the lake and lawns made for picnics. Most of it is free, with only the boating and some play facilities carrying a small charge.

It suits all ages as a relaxed couple of hours, with toddlers enjoying the ducks and play area and older children the boating and skate park. It is a good place to break up a Cheltenham visit or burn off energy on the way home.

Good for: outdoors, water, sporty, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
