Didcot Railway Centre
Great Western Railway heritage centre at Didcot with steam engines, sheds and ride days.
Didcot Railway Centre, next to Didcot Parkway station, is the home of the Great Western Railway, a living museum built around the original engine shed and works. Families can get close to historic steam locomotives, climb aboard carriages, watch engines being prepared in the shed and explore a recreated GWR station and rail environment. The smell, noise and scale of the engines are a real thrill for children.
On steam days and special events the locomotives are in action, with short train rides on the demonstration line, footplate views and the chance to see a working turntable. Quieter days are cheaper and good for exploring the sheds and exhibits at your own pace. There is a cafe, picnic areas and plenty for train-mad children to point at. Some areas are undercover, helping on a damp day.
It suits all ages, with the youngest loving the big engines and older children the working detail and rides. Check the calendar, as opening and steam days vary, and aim for a steam day if you want the trains running.
Good for: trains, history, rainy-day. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
