A genuinely absorbing day out in a part of Gloucestershire that many families overlook. The Gruffalo Trail works well for young children and the indoor galleries keep older ones engaged — particularly the industrial history section.

Dean Heritage Centre sits in a wooded valley at Camp Mill in Soudley, in the heart of the Forest of Dean. It tells the story of the forest and its communities through five indoor galleries — covering the forest's industrial past, wildlife, local crafts and the people who have worked and lived here across the centuries. The displays are pitched to hold the attention of older children as well as adults, and younger visitors are drawn in by the hands-on exhibits and the sheer variety of things to look at.

Outside, the mill pond and surrounding woodland set the scene for a full day out. There is a Gruffalo Trail winding through the trees, a woodland play area with climbing structures, and a reconstructed charcoal-burner's camp that gives a vivid sense of one of the forest's oldest trades. The site also has beehives, and seasonal activities are added throughout the year.

The Heritage Coffee Shop serves hot meals, snacks and cakes, and there is a picnic area by the water for families who prefer to bring their own food. The car park is free, and the combination of indoor and outdoor space means the centre works whatever the weather. It is an independent charity and everything you spend on site goes directly to keeping the place running.
