A gentle and genuinely lovely way to spend a summer morning on the Thames. The pedalos are manageable for all ages and the upper river here is quiet and green. Book ahead on busy summer days.

Cotswold Canoe Hire operates from Park End Wharf on the River Thames at Lechlade, one of the prettiest stretches of the upper Thames and the highest point on the river that is navigable by boat. The family-run business offers a relaxed way to spend a few hours on the water, with a choice of vessels to suit different ages and abilities: pedalos, traditional rowing boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are all available to hire.

The pedalos, which carry up to five people, are the most popular choice for families with younger children. They are stable and easy to manage, and children tend to take over the pedalling almost immediately. Traditional rowing boats make a gentler option for a drift upstream through the willows, watching the riverbank wildlife at close quarters. For older children and adults, canoes and kayaks give more freedom to explore, and there are usually different routes to try depending on the water conditions and your confidence level.

Lechlade itself is a quiet market town with the church of St Lawrence and the meadows along the Thames making a pleasant backdrop. The setting is peaceful, far from the busier stretches of the river further downstream. It is a seasonal operation and popular on summer weekends, so checking availability and booking ahead is a good idea. Bring a picnic and allow time to enjoy the river beyond the hire period.

Good for: water, outdoors, sporty. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
