Coate Water Country Park

Coate Water Country Park sits on the southern edge of Swindon, centred on a 70-acre reservoir created in the 1820s as a canal feeder. Entry to the park itself is free, and the range of things to do makes it a reliable outing through the year without spending much. The lakeside loop is flat and largely buggy-friendly, passing bird hides and reed beds where families can spot wildfowl and waders depending on the season.

For children the two seasonal highlights are the splash park and the miniature railway. The splash park is free and runs from late May to late September with water jets, sprays and splash features on a rubberised surface, and it fills quickly on hot days. The miniature steam railway runs on most Sundays and bank holidays from Easter through to August, a short ride that is popular with younger children. Beyond these there is a large inclusive play area, mini golf, pitch and putt and open grass for picnics and ball games, so there is enough to piece together half a day at no great cost.

The reservoir is also a nature reserve and attracts good numbers of birds, with hides around the shore offering close viewing. It suits all ages, from toddlers in the splash park to older children on bikes along the path. Check the splash park and railway dates before travelling as both are seasonal.
